Troubleshooting: common problems and fixes
- Clicking a line does not select any text. — The page is probably a scan — a picture of text rather than text. Run OCR PDF first, then open the searchable copy here.
- The edited line shows a slightly different letter shape. — The document uses a font with no exact match, so the closest metric-compatible family was used: widths and spacing are preserved even when a glyph differs slightly. Rewriting the whole line keeps the change uniform.
- I blacked out text with a rectangle — is it safe? — A black rectangle only covers content; the words remain in the file and can be copied out. Use Redact instead, which permanently deletes the text and pixels beneath.
- The file is rejected as password-protected. — Encrypted PDFs cannot be opened for editing. Remove the protection first with Unlock PDF (you need the password), then edit.

Will my fonts and layout really stay the same?

What if the PDF uses a font I do not have?

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

What is the difference between Whiteout and Redact?
Whiteout simply paints a white box over the area — quick, but the original text still exists in the file underneath. Redact permanently removes the text and image pixels under the box, like Acrobat’s redaction tool, so sensitive data cannot be recovered.
